DGC Dance Cover: Blackpink – How You Like That
DGC in your area!
With the dance performance video reaching more views than the original MV video, I knew that I absolutely needed to learn the choreography for Blackpink’s ‘How You Like That’. Luckily, DGC heard my prayers and Uyen started teaching us this tricky yet amazing dance.
DGC made Blinks even happier when they announced they would be doing a cover of ‘How You Like That’. After attending all classes and rehearsing at home, I decided to send in my audition video, crossing all my fingers. Soon after, the new Blackpink group was announced: Laura, Nafisa, Uyen and myself would have the honor of interpreting Jisoo, Rosé, Jennie and Lisa.
As Blackpink fans, we arrived at the first rehearsal and had already learned our individual parts. We were always talking about outfits, bias, favorite comebacks during the breaks. Yes, we took breaks; you can relate if you’ve also tried dancing the ‘How You Like That’s dance break 3 times in a row 🙂 For outfits and studio settings, we were inspired both by the (insane) official dance performance video as well as existing dance covers on YouTube. We agreed to stick to the essence of Blackpink and chose to honor our idols in powerful black and feminine pink.
After 5 weeks of rehearsals, filming day was upon us. We had everything planned: the studio, the outfits, the lighting, the teaser and photo ideas. What we couldn’t plan however, was the tube strike causing some delays in arrival. We also didn’t expect our pink sheets to immediately melt on the lights, giving a nice barbecue smell to the studio. We finally all made it to the studio and started getting ready: Uyen in charge of the pink eyeliner, Laura helping us clip in Jennie’s signature pink extension into our hair.
When we were getting ready, we could feel our stress levels going up and our faces getting camera shy. Surprisingly enough, the moment Dickie said ‘Filming’ during our first take, that stress disappeared and we all gave 110%, shocking even ourselves by how synchronized we looked. The rest of the filming went smoothly and we had fun trying out different camera angles for different takes.
We were lucky to film on the same day as another DGC dance cover group: TXT’s Lovesong. Having another group there motivated us to give our best performance. Between claps, laughter and cheers, they acted as the perfect audience. At the end of the day, we also decided to highjack each other’s dance covers with both TXT and Blackpink representatives making comedic guest appearances 🙂 (Get ready: maybe you’ll see these takes in the teasers!)
Participating in DGC dance covers gives you the opportunity to interpret your favorite idol as well as dancing with talented and friendly people. ‘How You Like That’ is my second cover with DGC and my first girl group cover and I cannot wait to do another one to meet more likeminded people: passionate K-pop fans, with whom you can be yourself 🙂
Thank you for reading our filming story for ‘How You Like That’!
